Mother of Sorrows School Vision
Our
Mother of Sorrows School will strive to be authentically Catholic and academically
excellent.
History
The history of
Mother of Sorrows School began in 1945 with the vision of the pastor of Our
Mother of Sorrows Church. Rev.
Daniel O’Rourke was concerned about the Catholic education of the children in
his parish. He obtained permission from the Diocese of Rochester to open
an elementary school in The Beamish House at 2135 Latta Road.
Fr. O’Rourke selected The Beamish House for its central location and
large rooms.
A group of
dedicated souls lead by our first principal; Sr. Agnes Cecilia, SSJ aided Fr.
O’Rourke. Sr. Joseph Gilmary
Russel SSJ, Sr. Teresian Curran SSJ, and Miss Marguerite McShea served as the
teaching staff and laborers for collecting textbooks, supplies, and furniture;
scrubbing floors and painting walls. In
1946, Mother of Sorrows School opened with 120 children and four teachers.
Fr. O’Rourke personally transported children to and from school every
day because bus transportation was unavailable.
Nine students were
in the first graduation class from Mother of Sorrows School. By 1948, the Beamish House replaced by a Quonset hut which was
setup on Mt. Read Blvd at the foot of Paddy Hill.
The six rooms of the Quonset hut served as the school until funding and
construction of our current school building at 1777 Latta Road was completed and
dedicated, in 1953. Mother of
Sorrows School has continued to serve the northwestern part of Monroe County at
this location.
